Scouting for Turkeys in Deer Season? Yes We Are and So Should You! (656)



Early deer season is an excellent time to assess the success of the turkey hatch during the previous spring! There was a very high poult survival here at The Proving Grounds while Missouri and most states report another year of low poult survival. https://youtu.be/5rDDXbdVekI Before the pre rut fires up throughout much of the whitetail's range, we wished to discuss turkey hunting. Early deer season is an excellent time to assess the success of the turkey hatch during the previous spring. Turkey and deer are both seeking food high in energy during this time of year so they often feed in the same areas and most poults are smaller than adult hens or toms. If there are more poults than hens, the local population will decline at least for a year. If there are more poults than hens, the local population is increasing and there will be good hunting opportunities in the future.
