Switchgrass for Deer Bedding–Base Cover? YES! Permanent full season bedding habitat? NO! Why not?!

Deer habitat management depends on a lot of things, and one of the most important is geography. Pure switchgrass for permanent deer bedding is something I do not recommend to clients, especially at northern latitudes. Pure switchgrass as a base cover to go from nothing to something is an excellent strategy, as long as there's a better future plan for permanent bedding cover. Here's a stand of quality CIR switchgrass shortly after bow season ended in northern Minnesota. Just a couple months back deer could disappear into this chest-high stand of switchgrass while moving between food plots and to escape, but even though this spot faces south and borders destination food it remains unused after the snow flies!
