The Big Takeaway (TL;DR)
White-tailed deer see the world in a two-color spectrum, making them completely blind to red and orange color wavelengths, but incredibly sensitive to blue light and UV brighteners. To stay hidden, avoid wearing blue clothing or washing your hunting gear in standard detergents that contain UV brighteners.
What the Study Found
- Objective: Researchers used electrophysiological flicker photometry to evaluate the photoreceptors in the retina of white-tailed deer to discover exactly how they process light spectrums and movement.
- Key Discovery: Deer possess a dichromatic (two-color) cone system that peaks sharply in the short-wave blue (450–460 nm) and mid-wave green (537 nm) spectrums. However, they completely lack the long-wavelength cones that humans have to detect reds and oranges.
- Management Impact: Because deer process visual changes rapidly, sudden movement will compromise your position instantly. Furthermore, while blaze orange stands out to humans, it looks like a flat, muted gray to a deer. Conversely, blue jeans and clothing washed in heavy UV detergents will radiate a bright, noticeable blue glow in the woods.
